    Screen Capture for Sensitive Systems

    Maintaining usable security in application domains such as healthcare or power systems requires an ongoing conversation among stakeholders such as end-users, administrators, developers, and policy makers. Each party has power to influence the design and implementation of the application and its security posture, and effective communication among stakeholders is one key to achieving influence and adapting an application to meet evolving needs. In this thesis, we develop a system that combines keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) capture with automatic text redaction to produce precise technical content that can enrich stakeholder communications, improve end-user influence on system evolution, and help reveal the definition of ``usable security.\u27\u27 Text-redacted screen captures reduce sensitivity of captured material and thus can facilitate timely data sharing among stakeholders. KVM-based capture makes our system both application and operating-system independent because it eliminates software-interface dependencies on capture targets. Thus, our work can be used to instrument closed or certified systems where capture software cannot be installed or documentation and support lack. It can instrument widely-varying platforms that lack standards-compliance and interoperability or redact special document formats while displayed onscreen. We present three techniques for redacting text from screenshots and two redaction applications. One application can capture, text redact, and edit screen video and the other can text redact and edit static screenshots. We also present empirical measurements of redaction effectiveness and processing latency to demonstrate system performance. When applied to our principal dataset, redaction removes text with over 93\% accuracy and simultaneously preserves more than 76\% of image pixels on average. Thus by default, it retains more visual context than a technique such as blindly redacting entire screenshots. Finally, our system redacts each screenshot in 0.1 to 21 seconds depending on which technique it applies

    Privacy-Preserving Screen Capture: Closing the Loop for Medical Informatics Usability

    As information technology permeates healthcare (particularly provider-facing systems), maximizing system effectiveness requires the ability to document and analyze tricky or troublesome usage scenarios. However, real-world medical applications are typically replete with privacy-sensitive data regarding patients, diagnoses, clinicians, and EMR user interface details; any instrumentation for screen capture (capturing and recording the scenario depicted on the screen) needs to respect these privacy constraints. Furthermore, real-world medical informatics systems are typically composed of modules from many sources, mission-critical and often closed-source; any instrumentation for screen capture cannot rely on access to structured output or software internals. In this paper, we present a solution: a system that combines keyboard video mouse (KVM) capture with automatic text redaction (and interactively selectable unredaction) to produce precise technical content that can enrich stakeholder communications and improve end-user influence on system evolution. KVM-based capture makes our system both application and operating-system independent because it eliminates software-interface dependencies on capture targets. Using a corpus of EMR screenshots, we present empirical measurements of redaction effectiveness and processing latency to demonstrate system performances. We discuss how these techniques can translate into instrumentation systems that improve real-world medical informatics deployments

    Teacher expectations of student's classroom behavior across the grade span: Which social skills are necessary for success?

Results indicated that all elementary and middle school teachers shared similar views regarding the importance of self-control skills, whereas high school special education teachers viewed self-control skills as significantly more important than did high school general education teachers. High school teachers rated assertion skills as significantly less important relative to elementary or middle school teachers. Results also indicated that teachers at high-risk schools viewed self-control and assertion skills as more critical for success than did teachers at low-risk schools

    Developing groupwork through outdoor adventure education: a systematic evaluation of learning and transfer in higher education

    For the majority of students, the ability to work effectively with others is an important part of higher education and future employment. Outdoor adventure education (OAE) courses are therefore used in higher education to provide students with a unique and challenging environment for developing transferrable groupwork skills. Working in an action research setting and informed by the Kirkpatrick model of training evaluation, the aim of this thesis was to investigate students’ experiences of OAE and the processes that underpin learning and transfer. Following a review of existing literature (Study 1), four empirical studies were employed using mixed methods. Qualitative methods were used to explore students’ experiences whilst immersed in OAE (Study 2) and when returning to education and entering employment, from a student, alumni, academic staff, and instructor perspective (Study 3). Questionnaires were also implemented to measure changes before and after OAE (Study 4) and again at follow-up (Study 5). OAE was found to improve groupwork skills, attitudes, and self-efficacy, resulting in improved academic groupwork, greater confidence, satisfaction, integration, and employability. Transfer was not achieved in all students however, and the thesis introduces a model for optimising learning and transfer (MOLT), which outlines the personal and environmental processes through which learning and transfer was achieved. Support is provided for existing theories within the literature and practical recommendations are made to further develop OAE. Novel research methods are also introduced such as a semi-structured video diary room

    Collusion-Resistant Group Key Management Using Attribute-Based Encryption

    This paper illustrates the use of ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE), a recently proposed primitive, in the setting of group key management. Specifically, we use the CP-ABE scheme of Bethencourt, Sahai and Waters to implement flat table group key management. Unlike past implementations of flat table, our proposal is resistant to collusion attacks. We also provide efficient mechanisms to refresh user secret keys (for perfect forward secrecy) and to delegate managerial duties to subgroup controllers (for scalability). Finally, we discuss performance issues and directions for future research

    Fluorogenic Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization in Aqueous Media as a Strategy for Detection

    The development of novel approaches to signal amplification in aqueous media could enable new diagnostic platforms for the detection of water-soluble analytes, including biomolecules. This paper describes a fluorogenic polymerization approach to amplify initiator signal by the detection of visible fluorescence upon polymerization in real-time. Fluorogenic monomers were synthesized and co-polymerized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in water to reveal increasing polymer fluorescence as a function of both reaction time and initiator concentration. Optimization of the fluorogenic ATRP reaction conditions allowed for the quantitative detection of a small-molecule initiator as a model analyte over a broad linear concentration range (pM to mM). Raising the reaction temperature from 30 C to 60 C facilitated sensitive initiator detection at sub-picomolar concentrations in as little as 1 h of polymerization. This method was then applied to the detection of streptavidin as a model biological analyte by fluorogenic polymerization from a designed biotinylated ATRP initiator. Taken together, these studies represent the first example of a fluorogenic ATRP reaction and establish fluorogenic polymerization as a promising approach for the direct detection of aqueous analytes and biomolecular recognition events

    Homograft use in reoperative aortic root and proximal aortic surgery for endocarditis: A 12-year experience in high-risk patients

    ObjectivesWe examined the early and midterm outcomes of homograft use in reoperative aortic root and proximal aortic surgery for endocarditis and estimated the associated risk of postoperative reinfection.MethodsFrom January 2001 to January 2014, 355 consecutive patients underwent reoperation of the proximal thoracic aorta. Thirty-nine patients (10.9%; mean age, 55.4 ± 13.3 years) presented with active endocarditis; 30 (76.9%) had prosthetic aortic root infection with or without concomitant ascending and arch graft infection, and 9 (23.1%) had proximal ascending aortic graft infection with or without aortic valve involvement. Sixteen patients (41.0%) had genetically triggered thoracic aortic disease. Twelve patients (30.8%) had more than 1 prior sternotomy (mean, 2.4 ± 0.6).ResultsValved homografts were used to replace the aortic root in 29 patients (74.4%); nonvalved homografts were used to replace the ascending aorta in 10 patients (25.6%). Twenty-five patients (64.1%) required concomitant proximal arch replacement with a homograft, and 2 patients (5.1%) required a total arch homograft. Median cardiopulmonary bypass, cardiac ischemia, and circulatory arrest times were 186 (137-253) minutes, 113 (59-151) minutes, and 28 (16-81) minutes. Operative mortality was 10.3% (n = 4). The rate of permanent stroke was 2.6% (n = 1); 3 additional patients had transient neurologic events. One patient (1/35, 2.9%) returned with aortic valve stenosis 10 years after the homograft operation. During the follow-up period (median, 2.5 years; range, 1 month to 12.3 years), no reinfection was reported, and survival was 65.7%.ConclusionsThis is one of the largest North American single-center series of homograft use in reoperations on the proximal thoracic aorta to treat active endocarditis. In this high-risk population, homograft tissue can be used with acceptable early and midterm survival and a low risk of reinfection. When necessary, homograft tissue may be extended into the distal ascending and transverse aortic arch, with excellent results. These patients require long-term surveillance for both infection and implant durability
